Thornton Colorado is located in Adams County, Colorado. Named by Mr. Hoffman for former Governor Dan Thornton. The name announcement came on Feb. 13th, 1953, about 3 months after F&S Construction announced plans for the $7 million, 5,000 home project about 10 miles north of central Denver. The first three model homes in the new community opened in April of 1953 and on January 31st, 1954 the first 40 families moved into their new homes constructed from the vision of builder Sam Hoffman. The city became incorporated (after failed attempts before) on May 26th, 1956 with a population of 8,640 residents and one square mile in size making it the 11th largest city in Colorado.

Today, Thornton Colorado boast over 100,000 residents and is one of the fatest growing cities in Colorado. Thornton has new shopping opening regularly including a new Super Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Sears Grand and other stores in the shopping areas on the northen edge of the city of Thornton. New home construction is expanding the city to the east, north and sometmes west. Thornton has easy access to major highways, including I-25 and Hwy 76. New light rail plans are being put into place to have multiple stops in Thornton along with the new toll road belt way loop.

The Thornton Colorado city owned park system has over 60 parks, many with installed swing sets, baseball diamonds, even fishing ponds. Thornton boast a state of the art recreation center, the Margaret Carpenter Rec Center, named for the former mayor and a city owned 18-hole golf course. Thornton holds numerous activities, the highlights being the annual ThorntonFest, HarvestFest and WinterFest..

Within a short drive of Thornton Colorado is Denver, Brighton, Northglenn, Westminster and Broomfield. All boasting numerous facilities, restaurants, entertainment and more regularly enjoyed by Thornton residents.Thornton students are primarily served by Adams County School Districts #12 and #1 and Mapleton School District #1.

The original 5,000 homes are mostly still standing and are primarily brick construction. Newer and larger homes area available primarily in northern Thornton. Thornton saw rapid price appreciation in the late 90's and early 2000's, but has been somewhat slow with some minor depreciation in areas for 2004-2006.
